'The Functional Art' has a cover


This is the cover for The Functional Art: An Introduction to Information Graphics and Visualization. The book will be published by the end of August this year. See the table of contents in the menus above.

The chart on it is an unusual kind of slopegraph. It shows the inverse relationship between the percentage of people with higher education in the US (each line is a state), on the left axis, and the percentage of people who are obese, on the right axis: the more educated people are, the less likely they are to be overweight, on average.

As you can see, the states that are on top on the left axis tend to be at the bottom on the right axis, and vice versa. I made it for one of the chapters, to illustrate my thinking process when I have to make sense of numbers and deal with an infographics project. I hope you like it:
