Dignifying infographics

Cole Nussbaumer explains why she disdains most infographics. We agree, but my instinctive response was to bring back this old post. Quoting myself:

"The term "infographics" has been hijacked in the past few years (...) It may be time for news designers and journalists to forcefully explain what our job consists of, and to bring the very word that defines us back to where it used to belong. It needs to be dignified."

Let's not forget that this, this, and these, all of them made by students of mine, are also infographics.

UPDATE: Cole has reminded me of this story about the future of infographics in which both of us are quoted.
